There were three goals I desired to achieve in my life before being married; a career with a promising future, a red Ferrari, and a house of my own. Hard work and a little education landed me the job and, it soon became obvious that a pick-up truck would be more suitable to my lifestyle (and salary) than the Ferrari. Real estate though, I was warned, would be difficult to find within the constraints of my preferred area and limited price range. However I persisted, and soon was moving into a place of my own!
Barely 800 square feet and easily overlooked as you drove down 31st Street, "my" house would soon become "our" home, and our home would soon become the gem of the neighborhood. Before the wedding, painting, landscaping and a white picket fence would spruce up the outside.
After the honeymoon, Meg and I began working inside from the ground up. Sanding and polishing revealed beautiful wood floors which had been hidden for years beneath carpet. The walls were painted and decorated with a cozy touch, and an aged but capable floor heater kept our feet toasty in the winter.
Our hard work and loving care of that first home would pay off - literally. The sale of our home enabled us to purchase a brand new "enormous" (for us!) 1,900 square foot two-story. We were in absolute awe of our new neighborhood. Not only did it become another beautiful, happy home but a great investment as well.
Proceeds from the sale of our second home then provided us the opportunity to purchase our current home, which, to our never ending amazement, is 2,000 square feet larger than our first home, with an open floor plan, big backyard and plenty of room to grow in. This is the home where the laughter and busyness of our soon to be adopted family will fill the rooms. Success can never be measured strictly in dollars and cents. Our investment and journey into home ownership has also reaped us rewards of happiness, security and the prospect of a wonderful future!
